Astronaut Visits Memorial, Encourages us to “Reach for the Stars!”

Yesterday afternoon, students in gr. 1-5 were enthralled as NASA Astronaut Steve Bowen shared his experiences of travelling in space. He began the program with amazing footage of ‘life’ in the International Space Station, showing the challenges of living in a low-gravity environment and the space-walks necessary for the construction and maintenance of the space station. During the talk that followed, Steve recounted his own experiences as a student, beginning in elementary school and continuing through the Naval Academy and NASA. His message was filled with encouragement and inspiration about hard work, learning all that you can, and making the most of every opportunity. “Reach for the Stars!” was the message, whether your dream has to do with space or not. Steve also mentioned that the International Space Station will be visible in the Night Sky on Sunday evening, April 15th, at 7:54 pm (EST). It will appear in the north/northwest sky as a blinking, fast-travelling ‘star.’ The children asked that the time be included in today’s bulletin to help them to remember to ‘look up!’

Steve’s visit was organized by the non-profit organization One Giant Leap, formed to help schools and communities learn about space exploration and to pursue science and math in schools. It was funded by the PTO, using dues paid and funds raised throughout the year. Thank you for the contributions you have made to support these kinds of enriching experiences for Memorial children! -- Mrs. R(ickershauser)

FROM THE OFFICE/Mrs. Rickershauser

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU…

The Toast to Memorial was a HUGE success, due to the efforts and participation of so many members of the Memorial Community! The class baskets were absolutely beautiful, and truly cherished by the lucky winners who took them home! Thank you to the parents and teachers who chose the themes for the baskets and shopped for the items to fill them. Thank you to Mrs. Burnham and to the many teachers and staff members who did such a great job wrapping them! Thank you to the families and staff members who were unable to attend but purchased raffle tickets ahead of time for a chance at winning one of the baskets or one of the many items that were raffled off. Thank you to those who donated delicious food items or items to be raffled or auctioned off, and to our corporate sponsors, who found a way to contribute even in these challenging economic times. And of course, thank you to the many who were able to join in the fun on Saturday evening -- making new friends and renewing old ones, ‘shopping’ at the raffle and silent auction tables, and bidding during the very lively LIVE auction too. Finally, a special note of gratitude to the organizers who worked tirelessly to make it all happen – Heather Brosnan, Michele Burnham, Janice Cobuzzi-Luecke, Donna DiBona, Kellie Fallon, Mary Fitzgerald, Jane Flanagan, Jolene Fogarty, Joe Gaiero, Colleen Gould, Barbara Hamilton, Linda Ingeme, Bridget Jay, Susan Lavacchia, Jen Locicero, Caroline Mallard, Jill Randall, Susan Schultz, Alicia Vaudo, Maryann Vigliotta, and Laura Vittum. (My apologies for any names that might have been omitted.) The funds raised from this wonderful event will be used to enrich and enhance the learning experiences for all Memorial School students. A heart-felt thank you to one and all for your generosity – of energy, time, funding, and spirit!

Bucket-Filling at Memorial

Now that spring has arrived and beautiful weather is just around the corner, staff are revisiting what it means to make good choices and be a TeRRiFiCC kid. Each child is receiving a blue card with the Memorial School Promise on one side, and the descriptors of TeRRiFiCC behaviors on the other.

The Memorial School Promise: To make our school a safe, calm, happy, and caring place, I promise to: 1) Be safe; 2) Be respectful; 3) Be a learner; and 4) Be a bucket filler. This will help me to learn to take responsibility for my own actions, and to do the right thing even when no one is watching!

The other side side goes on to explain:

TeRRiFiCC Kids are Bucket-Fillers!

I am a TeRRiFiCC kid when:

-I am Trustworthy. I tell the truth, I keep my promises, and I do the right thing.

-I am Respectful. I use good manners. My words and actions show consideration for others. I treat other people (and their property) the way I want other people to treat me and my property.

-I am Responsible. I make good choices, I do what is right, and I am accountable for my behavior.

-I am Fair. I play by the rules, I am open-minded, and I treat people right.

-I am a good Citizen. I work to make our school and community a better place to live and to learn.

-I am Caring. I am kind, helpful, and giving. Through my words and my actions, I show that I value the feelings of others.

These behaviors help me to make good choices every day. That is what makes me a bucket-filler and a TeRRiFiCC kid!

We thank you for the obvious work you are doing with your own children to develop these qualities too. Because the partnership between home and school is so important, we wanted you to be aware that we are working on them here at school too!

(If your child comes home with an unsigned Memorial School Promise card, please take a moment to sit with him or her and ask them to sign their name – and date - to the Promise. This will reinforce the importance of making good choices even when no one is watching for the benefit of all. ‘Every one’ of us counts! The card can remain at home, posted in a special place, to encourage this thinking and behavior outside of school too.)

Thank you, as always, for your support,

Mrs. Rickershauser
